Can someone please help me with 5 math word problems?

Postby bennie » Sat Oct 08, 2011 1:43 pm

I do all of my work I really do but I need help with these 5 problems!Please help!

Q,1) The sum of three consecutive integers is 267. What is the largest integer?

Q,2) Maya and Sally were the two finalists in a singing competition. The person with the most votes from the audience was chosen as the winner. Sally received 25% of the total votes and lost by 62,500 votes. No person in the audience was allowed to vote more than once. The equation below represents this situation, where y is the total number of votes cast and x is the number of votes Maya received.
x - 62,500 = 0.25y
If a total of 125,000 people voted, how many votes did Maya receive?

Q,3) Coach Johnson is 10 years older than Tim. When Tim started football 3 years ago, Coach Johnson was twice his age. How old is Tim now?

Q,4) The table below shows the fees to check bags on a certain airline.

Type of bag Fee per bag
First checked bag $20
Second checked bag $25
Extra bags $50

If x represents the total number of bags a person checks and each person checks more than two bags, the equation below can be used to determine C, the total fee for all the bags.

20 + 25 + 50(x - 2) = C

Arianna paid a total of $145 to check all her bags on a flight. How many bags did she check in all?

Q,5) A store offers a 15% discount on all items in the store during a sale. All store employees get an additional 10% employee discount. In the equation below, C represents the cost of an item for an employee including tax, and x represents the original price of the item.

C = 0.765x + 0.06(0.765x)

Chris is an employee at the store. He plans to buy a coat during the sale. The price of the coat before the discount is $100. How much will Chris pay for the coat during the sale?

q1

Let X = the largest number
therefore X + (X-1) + (x-2) = 267
Expand the brackets
X+X-1+X-2 =267
3X -3 = 267
3X = 270
X = 270/3
X = 90
(The three numbers are 88, 89, and 90)

NB the easiest way to approach this question was to realise that the lowest number is one less than the middle number and the higher number is one more than the middle number, the -1 and +1 cancel out so the middle number is simply 267/3 = 89. Therefore the larger number is one more than this = 89 +1 = 90

q2
x - 62500 = 0.25y
Multiply both sides of the equation by 4 to get rid of the fraction (0.25)
4x - 250000 = y
But we know that Y = 125000 voters
Therefore
4x -250000 = 125000
4x = 125000+250000
4x = 375000
x = 375000/4 = 93750

Again the quickest way is to recognise that if Sally received 0.25 of the votes, Maya got 0.75.(ie 1-0.25). 0.75 x 125000 = 93750

q3 Let Coach's present age = C and Tim's present age = T

C = T +10 (Coach is ten years older than Tim) Call this equation 1
C - 3 = 2(T - 3) (3 years ago Coach was twice Tim's age "then")
Expand the bracket
C - 3 = 2T - 6
But we know that C = T +10 from equation one. Substituting, (T+10) for C in the above equation gives
T +10 - 3 = 2T -6
10 - 3 + 6 = 2T - T
13 = T
Tim is 13 and therefore the Coach is 23 (ten years older)
Check
3 years ago the coach would have been 20 and Tim would have been 10
Therefore 3 years ago the coach would have been twice Tim's age = correct.

4.
20 + 25+ 50(x- 2) = 145
Expand the bracket
20 + 25 + 50x - 100 = 145
50x - 55 = 145
50x = 200
x = 200/50
x = 4

check
1st bag = 20
2nd bag = 25
2 further bags at 50 each = 100
Total = 20+25+100 = 145 = correct X = 4 bags in total.

Q5
C = 0.765x +0.6(0.765x) but we know that x = 100
C = 76.50 +0.06(76.50)
C = 76.50 + 4.59
C = 81.09
